Sompting is really two places joined by a road. Up on the downs you have the old village around St Mary's, with its Saxon tower, and a scattering of flint cottages and larger period houses that predate almost everything else in the area. Down towards the A27 and the Lancing boundary, it is post-war estate housing that spread out from Worthing through the 1950s and 1960s, with a steady layer of newer infill on top.
