Plumbing, heating and bathrooms in Ferring

Ferring is a bungalow village. There is period stock around the old centre and St Andrew's, and there are larger houses toward the sea, but the defining housing type here is the detached or semi-detached bungalow built between the 1930s and the 1970s, and that shapes almost every job we quote in the village.

Bungalows concentrate the plumbing problems in two places. The first is the loft. A single-storey property has a large, cold, often poorly insulated loft, and that is where the cold water tank, the expansion tank and a good length of pipework usually live. It is the main reason Ferring generates more frozen pipe calls per property than the two-storey housing a mile east, and it is a strong argument for either lagging everything properly or removing the tanks altogether with a combi or unvented conversion.

The second is the bathroom. Single-bathroom bungalows with an original layout are the norm, and level-access conversions are the most requested job in the village. Because there is no upstairs, moving a bathroom is often more feasible here than in a house, provided the drainage fall works.

Ferring questions

What people in Ferring ask us

Two things, and the first is cheap. Properly lag every pipe run in the loft, including the ones tucked behind the tank where the previous lagging was never finished, and make sure the loft insulation runs under the tank rather than over the pipes feeding it. The permanent fix is removing the tanks entirely with a combi or unvented conversion, which takes the vulnerable pipework out of the cold space altogether.

More easily than in a house, usually. The constraint is drainage: the waste has to fall to the existing soil connection, and in a bungalow on a solid floor that can mean either a pumped waste or lifting part of the slab. We check the existing run and the levels at survey and tell you which of the two it is before you commit to a layout.

Yes. Both are BN12 and both sit in the middle of our core corridor, so there is no difference in how quickly we can get to either.
