Plumbing, heating and bathrooms in Worthing

Worthing is the most varied housing stock on our patch, and the work changes completely depending on which part of it you are in. The town centre and the streets running back from the seafront are Victorian and Edwardian: tall terraces and villas, many of them converted into flats, with back additions where the bathroom was added long after the house was built. Broadwater and Tarring have older cores with later development wrapped around them, and Durrington and the northern edges are largely interwar and post-war semis.

The period properties are where the interesting problems live. Bathrooms sitting over back additions on undersized joists, lead supply pipe still running in from the street, single-stack waste arrangements retrofitted into buildings that originally had none, and heating systems in converted flats that share a stack with three other households. None of that is a reason to avoid the work, but it is a reason to survey before quoting rather than after.

It is also why leak detection is such a large part of what we do in BN11. In a converted Victorian terrace, water appearing on a ceiling very often started two floors up and travelled, and finding it properly beats opening up three rooms looking for it.

Worthing questions

What people in Worthing ask us

Regularly. The things to establish early are where the stack runs, whether your waste has to join a shared soil pipe, and what the lease says about work affecting the structure or the communal services. We will tell you at survey if something needs freeholder consent, because finding that out later is what stalls jobs.

It is worth replacing, yes. Lead supply pipe is still fairly common in the older parts of Worthing. Beyond the water quality question, it work-hardens with age and tends to fail without warning. Replacing the internal section with copper or MDPE is usually straightforward, though the section running under the pavement to the main belongs to the water company rather than to you.

All of it: BN11 through BN14, so the town centre, Broadwater, Tarring, Durrington, Salvington, High Salvington and Goring. It is a few minutes from our base and it is one of the areas we work in most.
